“As you know” is a red-flag phrase for James Cahill, president of financial service firm Drexel Hamilton.

“It’s an appeal to ignorance,” he told IBD.

Cahill learned never to accept such face-value statements decades ago as a student at Fordham University. By day, the young gun worked in New York City’s financial district at Salomon Bros., then Lehman Bros. By night, he was taking notes about ancient Greeks Plato and Socrates.

“They questioned everything,” Cahill said. “You learn to ask good questions and not accept things as they appear.”
