Dan Boyle Named 2017 Veteran of Influence

PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Philadelphia Business Journal has named Dan Boyle a 2017 Veteran of Influence. Boyle, Co-President of Drexel Hamilton, a service-disabled veteran-owned broker-dealer, was honored as one of the distinguished veterans, influential in the Greater Philadelphia business community during a ceremony on November 9, 2017.

During his 14-year military career, Dan received multiple awards: Operation Iraqi Freedom Medal twice; Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal; Navy Commendation Medal; and a Combat Action Ribbon.

“When I think of Dan Boyle, I think of a man of honor and integrity who served our country and continues to help and train veterans,” said Lawrence Doll, Founder of Drexel Hamilton.

Dan Boyle was inspired to join the U.S. Marine Corps. after the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001. He was deployed to Iraq twice and in 2011 learned about and joined Drexel Hamilton, a service-disabled veteran-owned broker-dealer headquartered in Philadelphia. In 2016, Dan was promoted to Director of Capital Markets, overseeing the firm’s participation in the underwritings of more than $700 billion in investment grade bond issues.

What was your proudest moment during your years of service? My proudest moment was having the wives and parents of my Marines come up to me upon returning from deployment and thank me for bringing their loved ones home safely.

Most memorable place you were stationed and what makes it stand out: I obviously spent a considerable amount of time in Iraq. It was memorable for so many reasons that I could never begin to articulate in a single email. I often tell people that many of the best and worst experiences of my life occurred leading Marines in Iraq and I wouldn’t trade any of them. That said what I often think of most about my time in Iraq is how lucky we are to be born and raised in America. When I watched the way families and children live their day-to-day lives in Iraq, it made me so appreciative for the way I knew that my children would grow up in America.

What qualities make veterans great job candidates? I believe Veterans make amazing candidates. At the very least, you know that they understand how to be part of a team and work toward a common goal greater than themselves. They understand the importance of training to a standard and not a time. The job is done when the mission is accomplished, not 5 p.m. I believe that solving the “unemployed veteran epidemic” is a self-fulfilling prophecy. For a long time employees did not know how to value a potential veteran hire. There was some risk and little historical evidence of Return On Investment (ROI), not to mention barriers to entry of many Human Resource Departments not understanding how to translate a military resume. The fact is that we are starting to see Post 9/11 Military Veterans gain enough upward mobility in their businesses that employers recognize the value that they bring to an organization.

Would you advise young people to consider the military? Do it. I have never met a single person who said that they regret joining the military, and that includes veterans who were gravely injured in service to their country. To a person, they are glad they made the decision to serve.

Your advice to recently discharged veterans: My first piece of advice would be, “Learn how to sell yourself. I know you have a ‘team-first’ mentality but in order for an employer to want to hire you, you need to convince them that it would be a mistake for them NOT to hire you. Figure out what job you want and go get it.” The second piece of advice I would offer is: “Be part of the ‘solution’. I don’t care what job you take or what role you serve at that job. You could be a garbage man, a teacher a doctor or a lawyer. It doesn’t matter. If your co-workers know that you are part of the problem, you will not be successful and if you are not sure…then you are probably part of the problem. Be part of the solution.”

All of the 2017 Veterans of Influence were honored at an awards reception on November 9th and in a special section of the Philadelphia Business Journal released November 10, 2017.
